THE AUTHOR

There is something I like very much about Alexander Fitzgerald - at least the person he appears to be in his books and courses, as I have never met him in person. The thing I like about him is that he comes out as a very honest person. He does not try hide any uncomfortable truths about himself or his background. He does not claim to be a math-wiz or poker wonder kid. Quite the contrary in fact. This whole book is about the fact that anyone who is prepared to do the hard work - and continue doing it, can become a successful high stakes poker player.

His point in the book is that poker talent is hugely overrated, and simple 'grit' aka hard work is hugely underestimated.

If you are prepared to do the hard work required to become a successful poker player, but you are not quite sure what the work actually is, this book shows you the way.

He says about the book:
This book, to my knowledge, is everything I know about how to study and decipher the game of poker. While I'll frequently make reference to common trends in the game today, my real goal is to show you how to solve poker hands for the rest of your life.
Teach a man to fish ... poker world style.

Scientific Poker Methodology

If you have ever read philosophy, you would most likely have come across Descartes. He based his whole philosophy by ditching everything that was perceived as common knowledge - and people still writes about him almost 400 years after he died.

In this book Alexander does something similar with his pokergame. He uses calculations and various software solvers to find out whether a play is good or not. He does not take anyone elses word for anything - if they can not prove it.

This way - by constantly working on his game, checking the most profitable way to play a certain spot, he stays on top of the game. He is perfectly aware that plays, that were good and profitable yesterday, may not be good today - as the poker population has learned to counter it.

RECOMMENDED SOFTWARE

Still in the beginning of the book, he takes a short time to describe the software he uses to do his off table work.

I am particularly font of this quote, which also indicates the amount of time used for training
It's possible the Flopzilla dinosaur ... and I have spent more time togeter in the last few years, than my wife and I have.
.Here Alexander goes through the different software solutions (all legal) he uses to track his plays (and his opponents). This again leads into a discussion about which stats you should have in your hud, and how to exploit various stats, in various situations.

It goes without saying, that there is no way anyone can touch more than the absolute basics about how to exploit stats, in just a few pages. However the few pages spent on this, will/should give the intellligent reader food for thought for months - not to mention that he/she should learn enough to get started in finding more ways to exploit villains themselves.

Detailed Handanalyses

Alexander goes through some very detailed handanalyses, explaining how to use the tools, he uses, how to alter the settings, so you find the breakeven situation for the spot, which is the borderline for when the play no longer becomes good.

These analyses go through all sorts of situations, 3-betting, 4-betting, 5-betting, as bluffs, semi-bluffs, in position, out of position etc. This then continues with a thorough examination of e.g. postflop play, flop texture and everything else you can ever think of. All the way through, every play and decision is documented and proven to be profitable. The author makes a point of telling the reader to do this work for themselves - and thus find his own ways/plays for situations.
